Thoracoscopy is a rapidly advancing technique in the diagnosis and treatment of children. Miniaturization of instrumentation and improved optics now allow extensive intrathoracic procedures to be performed in infants as small as 2 kg. Procedures such as lung biopsy and resection, biopsy or removal of mediastinal masses, esophageal surgery, and even patent ductus arteriosus closure can now be performed safely with minimally invasive techniques.
