With the passage of time, a British-born generation of New Commonwealth ethnic origin has emerged. They have received relatively less attention from researchers than their parents, because of the practice of using country of birth to identify subjects for research. A significant number of immigrants from India are in fact of British origin, and are not of Indian ethnicity. This article looks at the rate of psychiatric illness in the immigrant population and discusses whether or not studies reflect this.
