Gastrointestinal bleeding: initial management.

Acute bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract remains a common problem and may be life threatening. The initial evaluation should include an assessment of the amount of blood loss and the activity of bleeding and correction of intravascular volume depletion. Endoscopy of the gastrointestinal tract is used to determine the site of bleeding and, in some cases, to treat the bleeding site.
