Clinical use of oral hypoglycemic agents.

The pharmacology, mechanism of action, indications, interactions and clinical effectiveness of oral hypoglycemic agents, specifically the sulfonylureas and biguanides, are reviewed. The use of these agents is discussed in view of the findings of the University Group Diabetes Program study. It is concluded that oral hypoglycemic agents, in conjunction with diet and weight reduction, may be useful in selected patients but that insulin is preferable in most instances.
