In the present climate of growing awareness of ethical concepts and issues in nursing/midwifery, the teacher finds him/herself facing an increasing number of complex dilemmas. The authors argue that nurse/midwifery education requires a forum in which to discuss such issues and formulate guidelines. The development and work of a new type of ethics committee trying to provide such a resource in Durham and Teesside is described.
