Nageeb Mahfouz is the earliest novelist in Arabic to focus on the homosexual protagonist in his writing. Although the topic is objectionable in Islam, Mahfouz explores homosexuality in a sensitive manner, and reveals the transformation in his views regarding the dilemma of the homosexual protagonist in a hostile environment.
