This paper examines the steps which nurses and other health care staff can take to lessen the likelihood that prisoners will take ilicit drugs--both during their sentences and following release. It presents a range of possible approaches, ranging from the relatively straightforward to the sophisticated, from which nurses can choose the most appropriate intervention to use with a particular client.
