During the fast, ponderal decrease and energy expenditure of captive King Penguins are minimal for the incubating adults, and maximal for the moulting birds who are producing their new plumage and whose insulation is reduced at that time. Whatever their conditions, the slope of the ponderal decrease curve is uniform before reaching a critical zone. On the other hand, it is independent of the seasons for the unemployed birds.
