The importance of oligosaccharides in their own right and their effects on glycoprotein structure and function is being increasingly appreciated. Areas of interest include the importance of oligosaccharides to immune mechanisms, the association of certain changes with diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, and the potential for the development of novel therapeutic strategies.
