In this paper the authors describe the purification and characterization of a single molecular form of carbonic anhydrase from the bovine submandibular gland. This enzyme has a high specific activity for the hydration of CO2, a molecular weight of 29,500 dalton and a isoelectric pH of 4.9. It is found in a high concentration in the bovine salivary glands. Its possible physiologic role in the secretion of saliva is discussed.
