Long-term care continues to expand due to demographic, societal, and economic forces, and it is becoming a major factor in the reorganization of health care delivery. Nursing home medicine presents an unusual array of clinical and psychiatric problems, a different working environment, and a different set of administrative regulations. This care setting presents a challenge and an opportunity to the prepared physician.
