Acanthamoeba, leptomyxid ameba, and microsporidia have recently been recognized as organisms that cause opportunistic infections in patients with HIV and AIDS. As the numbers of patients with HIV and AIDS increase, more cases of amebic encephalitis and microsporidiosis are likely.
