Endovascular interventional neuroradiology was introduced less than 20 years ago, and has since then evolved to be an established treatment. Endovascular embolization is particularly well-suited for treatment of patients with intra/extracranial arterio-venous malformations, arteriovenous fistulae and inaccessible arterial aneurysms. Initiated through cooperation with a French team we have until now at the Radiological Department, Odense University Hospital, treated a total of 13 patients (one year). Eight arterio-venous malformations or fistulae have been completely (three patients) or partially (five patients) occluded with Histoacryl glue. In two other patients the internal carotid artery has been occluded with detachable balloons. Three additional patients with an extracranial cavernous hemangioma have been treated with direct puncture and injection of sclerosing agent (Alcohol) into the lesion, with resulting shrinkage of the lesion in all patients. Non-intended embolization of an artery was observed in one case. Endovascular interventional neuroradiology, especially embolization, is a step forward in the treatment of delicate vascular lesions in the brain and face.
