In remote regions of Canada, most patients with acute myocardial infarctions (MI) are treated by general practitioners. In hospitals served by cardiologists, intravenous thrombolytic therapy for MI is now routinely available. In a survey of northern Ontario general hospitals, 32 of 45 offered IV thrombolytic therapy. The use of streptokinase in one family physician-run hospital was also reviewed.
