Hyperosmotic shrinkage and hypoosmotic swelling of the internal mitochondrial membrane decrease considerably the efficiency of the reaction of the cyanide photodissociation from the cytochrome oxidase. The osmotic effect increases after the reduction of the membrane potential by a protonophore uncoupler. This suggests that the local photochemical reaction is subject to membrane control.
