The ability to adjust to a cancer diagnosis varies widely and is modulated by factors such as premorbid functioning, availability of social support, and the meaning of the crisis in the life cycle of the individual. The specific site of the malignancy also plays an important role in adjustment. Major concerns for genitourinary malignancies are urinary continence, fertility, and sexuality. Issues of sexual body image and identity as men or women are frequent concerns.
