Screening for hemolytic anemia was established in Fukuoka University Hospital based on automated analyses of enzymes and glycolytic intermediates in suspicious blood specimens. Using the screening system, we found more than ten hemolytic anemias due to abnormalities of membrane proteins, glycolytic enzymes and hemoglobin in the last two years. In the present report, we summarize the screening system for hemolytic anemias and present two types of hemolytic anemia due to abnormalities of band 3 protein and deficiencies in band 4.2 protein.
