Microbiological investigations can provide an early clue to the possibility of unsuspected underlying HIV infection. These case studies were randomly selected from the author's clinical practice and do not represent unusual or uncommon occurrences; they highlight the constant need to ask Could it be HIV? when interpreting laboratory results.
