The years from 1981 to the present have seen a steady increase in the incidence of AIDS in the female population. The corollary increase in the incidence of AIDS in pregnancy increases the responsibility of the obstetrician to become aware of the effect of AIDS on pregnancy and the effect of pregnancy on AIDS.
