Abstract

The historical review concentrates on M. Schultzes ingenious investigations in the 19th century. His work contains numerous methodological details, vigorous defense against theoretical and experimental criticism, and precise descriptions of the olfactory mucosa throughout the vertebrate kingdom, and left little for further investigations for many years; practically all of his careful observations proved to be correct.
