Rural oncology nursing practice combines state-of-the-art oncology skills and knowledge with the opportunity to care for neighbors and friends. Challenges include limited access to specialized health care, coordination of services, and maintenance of continuity of care for patients. Rural oncology nurses are faced with limited opportunities for specialty education, limited resources, few local colleagues, and unique care issues. Rural cancer nursing, however, can be creative and exciting. This article provides an overview of relevant rural health issues, challenges in providing oncology care in rural locations, and strategies for promoting oncology nursing practice in rural settings.
