The earliest reported trematode from a deep-sea fish, Distomum halosauri Bell 1887 collected by the H.M.S. Challenger expedition, is redescribed from fresh material taken from the type host in the northwest Atlantic. The species is assigned to Degeneria gen. et comb. n. Distinguishing characteristics are the combinaion of a pharynx, cirrus pouch with internal seminal vesicle, disposition of the uterus into the forebody, large eggs, and location in the excretory system of the host. The relationship of Degeneria to other gorgoderids is discussed.
