Abstract
The criteria which govern the design of anaesthetic equipment for emergency use away from a sophisticated operating theatre in a base hospital is discussed. A recently developed portable anaesthetic unit based on the air draw over principle and designed particularly for use with an obstetric flying squad is described and discussed.
