A national representative sample of 891 healthy women answered a questionnaire on the information provided about the routine ultrasound examination around the 17th week of pregnancy. Of 888 women 456 (51%) women stated that they had not received any form of information before the ultrasound examination. If a pregnant woman is supposed to make the decision about whether to have a prenatal ultrasound scan done or not, she must have specific information to enable her to do so. The fact that a large percentage of the women were not aware that the ultrasound examination is not compulsory denies them the right to make an autonomous decision.
