Septicemia and septic shock are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among hospitalized patients. Children undergoing chemotherapy, postsurgical procedures and those with AIDS are at increased risk for developing this unique type of shock. At the bedside, nurses play a pivotal role in early recognition and treatment, the key to survival.
