Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is shrouded in myths and misconception. The notion of ECT often generates high levels of anxiety among patients and their families. In response to this anxiety a pre-ECT teaching intervention was implemented by nurses at Strong Memorial Hospital. This intervention encompasses a five-step plan designed to lessen anxiety and educate patients and families. In addition, it provides an opportunity for health care providers to become sensitive to the special needs and fears of individuals and families faced with the decision of whether or not to proceed with ECT as a treatment.
