A thoroughly compiled medical family history is a cheap and beneficial component of the patient's work-up which gives clues for the identification and classification of susceptibilities to genetic disorders. The information can easily be summarized in diagrammatic form. The pedigree is drawn up in accordance with loosely standardize rules whose symbols are described in the accompanying article.
