This article demonstrates the importance of provisionals in achieving success with the final restoration. The purposes of a provisional restoration are discussed as well as the various types of provisional materials that are available. A direct technique, using a clear plastic matrix for the fabrication of a provisional bridge, is described. Included is a procedure for forming a pontic that will have accurate contacts and proper contours and embrasures every time.
