The demand for continuing care of the elderly, mentally ill continues to rise. The Government's latest response to this increase is to issue new guidelines on the responsibilities of the NHS in meeting continuing health-care needs. The general principles underpinning the guidelines are welcomed; however, this article identifies a number of problems with them regarding the elderly mentally ill.
