Proteins of the inner mitochondrial membrane display a diverse range of topological arrangements. These proteins, encoded either by the nuclear or mitochondrial genomes, contain sequence determinants, so-called topogenic signals, which direct newly synthesized proteins to their final orientation in the membrane. The recent analysis of sorting pathways of a number of proteins highlights that these topogenic signals might act in different ways.
