This paper shows how modern analytical medical ethics can be used to analyse cases of medical research and medical preventive measures. The European Nicotinamide Diabetes Intervention Trial (ENDIT) is used as an illustrative example. The most ethically crucial phases of this trial are identified and ways of analysing them in order to reach ethically reasonable conclusions are suggested. Some of the ethical problems faced by general preventive programs are briefly addressed. The case of diabetes prevention serves as an example.
