Abstract

The literature pertaining to deaf-blind persons was reviewed to acquaint occupational therapists with the needs of this population and to delineate their role in the habilitation of these persons. Two examples of the occupational therapy role in programming for deaf-blind children were described. In the late 1960s, occupational therapists were needed in small numbers, therapists who could work intensively in specific programs for deaf-blind children; in the late 1970s, a much greater number will be needed to provide services to small numbers of deaf-blind persons of all ages who will be attending the same schools, clinics, sheltered workshops, and group living facilities as will other handicapped persons.
