The vastness and the regional differences that are a part of Canada have not hindered the establishment of national medical standards. On the contrary, Canadian physicians continue to strive for excellence, which is reflected in the national and regional organizations that they have created and the growth of continuing medical education. The highlights, with an emphasis on otolaryngology, of what has evolved since Confederation in 1867 are reviewed.
