It is now accepted that social phobia causes important occupational and social dysfunction and the recognition that effective treatments are available represents considerable advance. Measuring outcome is a necessary part of the assessment of the usefulness of treatment and new rating scales have been developed to measure both improvement in symptoms and changes in disability. Both self-rated and observer-rated scales have been developed, though observer scales tend to be preferred because they are less prone to interindividual variability.
