Abstract
A retrospective study was carried out comparing the numbers of patients attending a clinic, run by the Nottinghamshire family health services authority, for emergency dental treatment, before and after the October 1990 dental contract. In 18 months prior to October 1990, 1010 patients were treated at the emergency clinic. Of these 60.4% regularly attended a dentist. During the 18-month period after October 1990, 567 patients were treated, a reduction of 44% overall. Of these 46.9% were regular attenders.
