To reduce intraocular concentrations of mitomycin-C (MMC), the authors used a scleral shield instead of a surgical sponge for the application of MMC during surgery.
A total of 20 patients were operated on using the scleral shield with MMC. These patients were observed for 6 months postoperatively.
The rate of hypotony was 25% (5 of 20 patients). Visual acuity was not markedly reduced, and no case of hypotony maculopathy developed. The success rate and complications were not different from those of previous studies using the surgical sponge.
The scleral shield may be advantageous for reducing the rate of hypotony maculopathy.
