In isolated thoracic segments of the trachea, the effect of novocain involved an increase in the muscle tone and an initial augmentation of the muscle responses to transmural stimulation with subsequent reversal of the reaction. The effect seems to be based on blockade of a sensory link of local reflex arches implemented by the metasympathetic nervous system.
