General anaesthesia is defined as a state of pharmacological coma. After a brief review of the central neurotransmission, the active mechanisms of general anaesthesia are analysed, as a pharmacological basis for an adequate understanding of their effects and interactions, with special emphasis on the neurological and cardiovascular aspects.
