A clinical project to reduce confusion in hospitalized, older adults.

An innovative program to reduce confusion in elderly hospitalized patients was implemented and evaluated for use by staff nurses as part of their usual care activities. Four categories of environmental optimization interventions (EOI) were developed. Attention to factors in the hospital environment that fostered or inhibited implementation of the interventions by the EOI nurses made the program beneficial to patients and nurses.
