Clinicians, units and hospitals in the UK should develop written policies for thromboembolic prophylaxis. Deep-vein thrombosis is both life-threatening and costly. The use of prophylaxis should be included in clinical audit and plans for patient care. The implementation of research-based and agreed guidelines can reduce the incidence of postoperative deep-vein thrombosis.
