Histological changes were studied in 34 senile cataractous lenses removed surgically from patients aged 50 to 78 years. Sixty-eight percent had nuclear sclerosis, 44% swollen cells and morgagnian globular changes, 23% calcium deposition, 15% migration of epithelial cells beneath posterior capsule and villous projection in posterior in 7%. Several cases had more than one histological abnormality. There was significant reduction in the diameter of epithelial cells of the cataract and insignificant change in capsular thickness.
