Irreducible superior dislocation of the patella requiring open reduction.

The authors describe a case of superior dislocation of patella that was irreducible by closed methods. Extensive review of the literature revealed that this is the first case reported in which an open reduction was needed to reduce a superior dislocation of the patella to unlock the osteophytes, which were blocking the closed reduction.
