Electron microscopic examination using tannic acid fixation strongly supported the view that lipid droplets in the normal human sebaceous gland originate from smooth-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum. A true limiting membrane was clearly detected around the lipid droplets in the incipient stages but was undetectable in mature droplets.
