The syndrome of minimal brain dysfunction is found in at least 5% of South African schoolchildren. The aetiology and pathology of this entity are uncertain. Presenting features include hyperactive behaviour, problems of fine motor co-ordination, learning disabilities and certain 'soft' neurological signs. Skilled remedial teaching is the mainstay of successful management.
