Elevated liver enzymes are a frequent clinical finding. Their significance depends on the clinical presentation and setting. Symptomatic patients with acute or chronic liver disease carry an increased surgical risk. To reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with symptomatic liver diseases the understanding of the pathophysiology of liver dysfunctions is of paramount importance for the pre-, intra- and postoperative management of such patients.
