Eye tics are among the most common manifested symptoms of tic disorders, including Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS).
A review of medical literature or ocular signs and symptoms of tic disorders was conducted.
Tic disorders are characterized by repetitive and often disabling movements that primarily involve the eyes, face, neck, and voice apparatus. In addition, patients with tics may have eye problems related to medications used to control tics. Some eye signs are atypical in tic disorders and their presence may suggest alternate diagnoses.
Eye tics can be disabling and a optometrist should be familiar with ocular manifestations of tics and ocular dysfunction related to tic treatment, and also be aware of other neurologic conditions confused with tics.
