The origin of gastroenterology societies during the twentieth century.

In this article, I describe briefly how a group of major gastroenterologic organizations, which have contributed to the steady advance of gastroenterology during this century, developed. My purpose in this presentation is not only to provide a memoir of what, to me, were very exciting times but also to help today's younger physicians come to appreciate those past events that make today's opportunities possible.
