Endothelial cells play a critical role in the recruitment of immune cells due to their position at the interface between circulating cells and the inflamed tissue. In this study, human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and human monocytes were used to investigate the role of various cytokines in the regulation of C-C and C-X-C chemokine production. We have demonstrated that IL-4 and IL-10 negatively affect certain monocyte-derived chemokines, while not suppressing HUVEC-derived chemokines. The differential induction of chemokines by selected cytokines may help delineate the type(s) of leukocytes that are recruited during certain phases of an inflammatory response.
