As many as 20% of individuals who develop venous thromboembolism (VTE) in an outpatient setting may have a mutation in factor V (factor V Leiden) or the prothrombin gene. Through testing for the inherited and acquired conditions for VTE, the clinician can develop strategies to prevent recurrences.
