Single case research in mental health.

In the drive to evidence-based practice, mental health nurses may be doubly disadvantaged. They lack both a strong research culture and the political power to influence large-scale developments. One approach to overcoming this hurdle is the evaluation of innovative treatments through the experimental evaluation of single cases and case series. This article explores the rationale and requirements for single case experimental designs and gives an example of the use of the approach in service development.
